The Municipality of Messina adheres to the national initiative “Domenica lunch”, promoted by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests, with the support of the ANCI, as part of the path that sees Italy candidate for the registration of Italian cuisine in the UNESCO’s immaterial heritage list, whose decision will be taken in New Delhi on December 10, 2025.
The mayor of Messina, Federico Basile, underlines: “As mayor and member of the Anci national board, I accepted with great enthusiasm the invitation of the ANCI and, together with the team of councilors, we promptly organized an event that wants to celebrate the Sunday lunch as a family and collective rite around the table. A moment that contains gastronomic knowledge, conviviality and that sense of belonging well beyond the communities, By representing the Italian identity to the best.
The appointment is set for Sunday 21 September 2025, at 12, when a symbolic lunch will be set up in Piazza Unione Union which, through typical dishes, local products, chefs and restaurateurs in the area, will tell the wealth of our gastronomic tradition. “The event represents a significant opportunity to enhance local traditions and their contribution to national identity – declares the commissioner for productive activities Massimo Finocchiaro -. The initiative testifies to the profitable synergy between the administration and local realities, whose commitment and contribution are fundamental for the promotion of the cultural and artisan heritage of our city. The format provides: exhibition of the official logo of Italian cuisine, created by the children of the art school of the state polygraphic medal; presence of chefs, restaurants and trattorias symbol of the territory; Filed tables with typical products and decorations in the colors of the tricolor, to underline the unity and strength of the country system. The city authorities will take part in the appointment, a prominent personality of Messina and experts and food and wine scholars, testifying to the desire to unite institutions, communities and skills around a single shared value: the tradition of the Italian table.
