«The result is clear and I respect it. I congratulate Fabio Roscioli and wish him good work. From today it will have to represent me too, it will have to represent all of us.” Frank Benedetto, centre-left candidate in the Reggio Calabria by-elections, commented on the outcome of the vote in a note. He thanks those who supported him, draws attention to abstentionism and claims a recovery of consensus in the city compared to the May administrative elections.
«Thanks to those who voted for me, to those who believed when the polls said otherwise. Thanks to the volunteers, the militants, the associations, to those who traveled kilometers with me, to those who organized a meeting in a country where no candidate had ever been before”, says Benedetto.
Thanks are also addressed to the mayors of the metropolitan area, “who have allowed us in some municipalities to achieve an extraordinary result beyond my own expectations”.
The alarm about abstentionism
For Benedetto, the fact that should worry us the most is the lack of participation: «Too many people have chosen not to vote, to no longer believe that their vote can change anything. We must all work harder to restore credibility to politics and bring people closer to voting.”
As for the result of the coalition, the candidate underlines that “there has been a recovery of consensus in the city for the centre-left, compared to the last administrative elections in May, of almost 10 percentage points”. A figure that he considers “a very important restart to relaunch the coalition’s prospects”.
«The energies mobilized must not be wasted»
Benedetto also expresses satisfaction with the result in the province, attributing it to the work of the mayors and citizens rooted in the area. «The political energies that have been mobilized on this occasion must not be wasted and my commitment will be on this», he assures.
The electoral campaign, he adds, represented «the beginning of a journey, not the end. The beginning of a rebirth: a policy that presents itself to people in a polite and proactive manner.”
«I saw that there is a desire for this. I saw that the Reggio area has enormous energy. Back to work tomorrow. With the same passion, with the same goals. From here, for everyone. Now more than before”, concludes Benedetto.
