At Christmas there are those who illuminate moments of pain and confusion with hope: they are the doctors, nurses and all healthcare workers who in the hospital wards face the suffering of patients with competence and humanity, making care not just a job, but a true life mission, capable of transforming hospitals and communities into places of listening and attention.
For the second consecutive year, the city’s health authorities – the Irccs Neurolesi Bonino Pulejo-Piemonte, the Asp, the “Gaetano Martino” university hospital and the Papardo – wanted to celebrate this “mission” together, gathering in the Cathedral for a moment of prayer and reflection.
The mass, presided over by Archbishop Giovanni Accolla, saw the participation of civil and military authorities and representatives of the Red Cross, whose precious role was highlighted by the words of the pastor of the Church of Messina.
«Your service is the most beautiful sign of sharing; a simple look directed at a suffering person is the most beautiful way to celebrate Christmas, it is going towards Jesus in that manger in which he was born, in the hospital wards, places of suffering and hope”, said Mgr. Accept by contacting the city’s health workers.
The celebration also had a solidarity value, with a fundraiser and food items destined for the Christmas lunch of the Community of S. Egidio, in favor of the most vulnerable. A sign of the “mission” of those in the ward: not just diagnosis and treatment, but attention to the person as a whole, respect for dignity and support in difficulties, as underlined by the general director of the Irccs Maurizio Letterio Lanza: «Those who work in hospitals not only take care of the body, he said, but also the hearts and the hope of the patients».
