An all -female clash between suspicions, tensions and ambiguity in the psychological thriller “The girlfriend”, available on the first videos since last September 10 at the same time worldwide. Taken from the novel of the same name by the English writer Michelle Frances – published in Italy by Nord Editrice and adapted by Gabbie Asher and Naomi Sheldon – the series is directed and played by the Hollywood star Robin Wright, a memorable interpreter of “Forrest Gump” and “House of Cards”, protagonist with Olivia Cooke, face of Alicent Hightower of “House of the House of the Dragon “, and already in the cast of” Slow Horses “on Appletv+.
In the six episodes the two actresses are Laura and Cherry, respectively mother and girlfriend of the young Danny (Laurie Davidson). Laura is an apparently realized woman, a career professional supported by the love of his son and husband Howard (Waleed Zuaiter). His cover life will begin to crumble when Danny will bring home Cherry (Cooke), a young man who seems to hide something. But is the girl truly a manipulative and social climber or is it all the result of Laura’s paranoia, which nourishes a form of possession towards the child almost at the limits of normality? The truth will gradually emerge throughout history.
Shot in London, with some scenes made in Spain, “The girlfriend” was announced in May 2024, with the news that Asher and Sheldon would have adapted Frances’ novel in a television series, flanked in writing by other screenwriters, including Marek Horn, Ava Wong Davies and Polly Cavendish. Asher and Sheldon also take care of the executive production of the series together with Wright and Frances. Among the producers also Jonathan Cavendisch – Already behind “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” and the Bridget Jones saga – and Will Tennant, who has previously worked on titles such as “Godzilla”, “The ritual” and “Whoever marks wins”. Tayna Moodie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Karen Henthorn and the Thai actress Francesca Corney also in the cast.
