Although, in his press conference on Thursday, the National Director of the Portuguese judicial police did not want to discard any hypothesis yet compared to the accident of the Lisbon funicular, who on Wednesday made 16 deaths and dozens of injuries, the assignment of the cable that held the two wagons united is always the strongest hypothesis, also accredited by recent images transmitted by the Portuguese news.
Now that the cleaning operations of the accident site have begun, the images show some workers to extract a visibly damaged metal cable from the tracks.
Just on Wednesday morning, therefore a few hours before the disaster, an inspection carried out by the company in charge of maintenance had reported that the cable could be used for another 263 days, declaring the lift suitable for operation.
