Noise barriers and signs to limit speed on provincial road 241, near the Torano Scalo school. This is the intervention that the leader of the Civil Rights Movement, Franco Corbelli, once again urges with a note, recalling what was announced by the president of the Province of Cosenza, Biagio Faragalli. The building, adjacent to the road, houses the primary and nursery classes, with around fifty children. “I ask that we proceed as soon as possible because the school reopened two weeks ago and the risk situation still persists,” says Corbelli, who launched an initial appeal on June 23, raising the concerns of some parents.
The announced intervention and the alternative to the bumps
According to Corbelli, Faragalli had immediately ensured the adoption of appropriate measures. The solution identified involves the installation of noise barriers, accompanied by adequate signage. The activist remembers initially asking about the speed bumps. A possibility which, he explains, reporting what was communicated to him by the President of the Province, would have been excluded by the provisions of the regulation of the Highway Code, since the stretch is considered a preferential itinerary for emergency or emergency vehicles. «President Faragalli, whom I thank, informed me in response to one of my various messages that work was being done to provide a possible and adequate solution, with noise barriers, to the reported problem», underlines Corbelli.
With his last message to the president, the activist renewed his request to intervene. He also arranged, in collaboration with the mayor Franco Raimondo, to have the Municipality of Torano Castello forward the requested information on the location of the school building.
Parents’ concerns about traffic on the provincial road
At the center of the reporting is the daily passage of cars, trucks, buses and articulated vehicles. According to Corbelli, many vehicles travel along the road at high speed, even exceeding the established limit, creating a dangerous situation for children, school staff, pedestrians and residents.
The school is located near a crossroads and a short distance from the Torano-Bisignano junction of the A2. The vehicles coming from the south, observes the activist, reach the area after a straight stretch of about a kilometre. A context that fuels the concerns of families especially during entry and exit times, both for those using the school bus and for children accompanied by their parents.
The case was reported to Corbelli by the mother of one of the students, telling him that she anxiously waited every day for her son to return home. The June appeal was born from that request, followed by contacts with the Province, responsible for the road.
«The confirmation of the next intervention then arrived, which I hope is now imminent», concludes Corbelli. «The priority objective must always be prevention and in this case to get all the vehicles at walking pace near the primary school of Torano Scalo».
