Overwhelmed by a landslide while taking care of his farm. This is how Benedetto Donato, 80 years old, died yesterday afternoon at the foot of the San Vito district, in Castrovillari. The man was tending animals and land when a massive detachment of mud and stones buried him. The family members immediately alerted the emergency services: 118, Carabinieri under Captain Michelangelo Iocolo, firefighters from the Castrovillari Detachment and the air ambulance operated non-stop, but every attempt was in vain. The position of the body was identified thanks to the protrusion of an arm; the recovery work continued until late in the evening, until the transfer to the “Ferrari” hospital. The Prosecutor’s Office opened a file, entrusting the information to the head of the prosecutors, Alessandro D’Alessio. The landslide, in the heart of the Coscile river valley, ancient Sybaris, would have been favored by the sudden change in temperatures and intense rains that battered already fragile slopes such as “San Vito”, Canal Greco and the Fiumicello valley. All surfaces at high risk of erosion according to the Pai, which require monitoring and safety, highlighting the urgency of interventions to prevent new tragedies.
