The meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will be held on August 15 in Alaska. Trump announces it on his social truth.
American officials, Ukrainians and several European countries will meet at the weekend in the United Kingdom to try to reach a common position before the meeting between the American and the Russian president. Axios reports by citing some sources, according to which the idea of a meeting in person emerged today during a conference call among officials, the third in three days.
Trump will therefore host Putin in the United States, to be exact in the territory purchased by the USA more than a century and a half ago by Russia. With the visit to Alaska Putin he returns to the United States for the first time in almost ten years. In fact, the last visit of the Kremlin leader in the USA dates back to September 2015.
The last meeting between Putin and an American president was instead in Switzerland in 2021, before the invasion of Ukraine, when he met Joe Biden in Geneva. Putin met Trump six times during the first term of the American president, while he saw Barack Obama on nine occasions. Putin and George W. Bush instead saw themselves 28 times during the two mandates of the former American president, and the leader of the Kremlin was the first to call him after the attacks of 11 September.
“The Kremlin expects that, after Alaska, the subsequent meeting between the Russian and American presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump takes place in Russian territory”. This was stated, reports the Interfax agency, the director of the Russian leader Yuri Ushakov, commenting on the choice of Alaska as the seat of the top of the heads of State of Russia and the United States of 15 August. “Looking to the future, we should aim to ensure that the next meeting between the presidents is held in Russian territory. The corresponding invitation has already been extended to the President of the United States,” said the Kremlin spokesperson.
As for the choice of Alaska as a place of the first meeting, Ushakov said that “Russia and the United States are neighbors, neighboring. And it seems completely logical that our delegation simply crosses the Bering Strait and that such an important and expected summit of the leaders of the two countries is held in Alaska”.
