While waiting for the end of the qualifiers, with four Italians competing in the last round (Cinà, Guerrieri and Passaro for the men and Stefanini for the women), there are nine Italians competing in the main singles draws of the US Open, the fourth and final round of the Grand Slam of the season. In the men’s main draw there are the top seeds Flavio Cobolli (5), Lorenzo Musetti (13), Luciano Darderi (21) and Matteo Arnaldi (32). With them at the starting line also Matteo Berrettini, Mattia Bellucci and Lorenzo Sonego. In the women’s individual tournament, however, there will be room for Jasmine Paolini (19th seeding) and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
The singles matches will begin on Sunday on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows Park in New York. Meanwhile, today the main draws were drawn for both the men’s tournament, without the world number one Jannik Sinner but with the returning Carlos Alcaraz starting, and the women’s tournament, with the challenge between Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina for the top of the international ranking taking center stage.
The draw for the Azzurri
These are the pairings of the first round of the men’s singles of the seven Italian tennis players: Flavio Cobolli vs Francisco Comesana (Arg); Lorenzo Musetti vs Arthur Fery (GBR); Luciano Darderi vs qualified/lucky loser; Matteo Arnaldi vs James Duckworth (Aus); Matteo Berrettini vs Stan Wawrinka (Sui); Mattia Bellucci vs qualified/lucky loser; Lorenzo Sonego vs Alexander Zverev (Ger). A treacherous turn, therefore, for Musetti, as opposed to the “surprise” of Wimbledon. The challenges of Berrettini, opposed to the veteran (wild card) Wawrinka, and especially of Sonego, who faces the number one on the scoreboard Zverev, are evocative.
The draw of the blues
These are the pairings of the first round of the women’s singles of the two Italian players: Jasmine Paolini vs Veronika Erjavec (Svn); Elisabetta Cocciaretto vs Katerina Siniakova (Cze). Paolini will play for the 24th time in the main draw of a Slam, the sixth at the US Open. Her record at Flushing Meadows is 6 wins and 6 defeats: her best result dates back to 2024, when she stopped in the round of 16. Cocciaretto faces the twentieth Slam of his career. In the Big Apple, in four appearances, the 24-year-old Italian has scored one victory and 4 defeats. Her only success that took her to the second round (her best result) dates back to the 2024 edition.
