Flavio Cobolli wins on his debut at the US Open, a long and complicated match against the Argentine Francisco Comesana. The n.119 in the ATP ranking forces the Italian to come back from 0-2 to eventually win 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, after well over four hours of play.
“I am a warrior and I made an incredible comeback,” said Flavio Cobolli at the end of the match lasting over four hours that pitted him against the Argentine Francisco Comesana at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. “I’m also a little crazy and I have an incredible team,” said the world no.5, proclaiming that “it’s really fun to play on this US Open court: every time I put my heart into it.” Cobolli added that for the recovery in view of the next round he will be seen from Via Della Pace, the restaurant in the East Village which for years has been a sort of headquarters for Italian tennis players during the US Open: «Come to Via Della Pace to see how good the Italian cuisine is», he invited fans in the interview from the stadium.
Bellucci also advances
Mattia Bellucci passes the first round of the US Open, beating the Hungarian qualifier Zsombor Piros in three sets with a score of 6-4 6-2 6-0 in one hour and 58 minutes of play. The Lombard tennis player, number 95 in the ATP ranking, will now face the American Taylor Fritz, number 10 ATP and finalist at Flushing Meadows in 2024, who defeated his compatriot Darwin Blanch, number 245 in the ranking, in three sets and in the main draw thanks to a wild card, with a score of 6-3 6-2 6-4.
