Wide shot, tests of unity but also tensions: Schlein, Conte and the capital issue

The candidate is now there, the program is not yet. In the aftermath of the firm point made by Elly Schlein on the race to Palazzo Chigi, the wide field finds itself with one more certainty and several unknowns still on the table. The three “p”s of the alternative – perimeter, primaries and program – remain to be resolved. And, once the twenty-four hours of the Cloud have been disposed of, the first reminder arrives from the M5s: it is good to have clarified the dem leadership, but now we need a roadmap to build the program and get to the gazebos. Excluding, needless to say in the Campo Marzio area, the possibility of automatically assigning the candidacy of the progressive camp to the party with the most votes.

The first step could be a dress rehearsal of unity in the streets: contacts between the leaders are expected in the next few days to organize the joint mobilization against the high cost of living launched by Avs. In addition to the meeting of the current dem in Montepulciano, with “the spirit of the referendum”.

Provenzano and Malpezzi, sparks on the rules

In the aftermath of the assembly, satisfaction prevailed at the Nazarene for the secretary’s surge of pride, appreciated, according to several dem sources, in a “transversal” way. Among the reformists – where Giorgio Gori’s exit from the assembly had been taken into account and does not seem destined to leave any major consequences – what is above all reassuring is the support for Kiev. But, once the day under the banner of “unity” is over, questions remain. And some exposed nerves.

Giuseppe Provenzano puts his finger on it, convinced that the absence of challengers is proof of the consensus around the leader: if someone had collected the necessary signatures, he claims, he would have been able to run. But “the vast majority of the Democratic Party recognizes itself in Elly Schlein’s candidacy.” A reading that doesn’t go down well with party colleague Simona Malpezzi. «Provenzano is wrong», replies the senator: the issue was not the challengers, but respect for the statute, which provides a regulation to regulate candidacies in the primaries. “Support for our secretary is not in question”, he makes it clear, however implying that the bending of the rules has not gone down well.

The patrimonial knot

The real test will be to get the allies to agree on the route to follow. An exercise in unity is currently underway in the Senate, where the opposition is working on common amendments to the School decree. The economic terrain is more difficult, where the capital, Avs’ strong point, has been added to complicate the debate in recent days. Already rejected by Giuseppe Conte, the patrimonial law is also handled with caution by the Democratic Party, which – again according to Provenzano – prefers to focus on a European taxation of great wealth, which would however require the unanimity of the Twenty-Seven.

Montepulciano and the Salis factor

In the meantime, the challenge will be the dem current to try to fill it with content. From Friday to Sunday Dario Franceschini, Andrea Orlando and Roberto Speranza will set the table for “Ready for the alternative” in Montepulciano, calling together managers, unions, businesses and intellectuals. Last year, when the slogan of the current dem was still “Building the alternative”, there were over two thousand attendees. This time the trio’s ambition – with Schlein closing the proceedings – is to involve the energies mobilized for the No vote in the referendum on justice in the writing of the programme.

Behind the scenes remains the name of a candidate who doesn’t want to run: Silvia Salis is once again excluded, “totally”, from the primaries. Under the Lantern he already has his work cut out for him. “I will give my support to whoever will be the centre-left candidate”, he assures, not without a recommendation: if there are gazebos, let them become a celebration of participation, not a settling of accounts.
