Japan Airlines reported a cyber attack that caused delays to domestic and international flights and was then “addressed”. The airline, Japan’s second largest after All Nippon Airways, said 24 domestic flights were delayed by more than half an hour. Public broadcaster NHK said problems with the airline’s baggage check-in system caused delays at several Japanese airports, but no major disruptions were reported. «We have identified and addressed the cause of the problem. We are checking the system recovery status,” Japan Airlines wrote in a post on X.
«Ticket sales for domestic and international flights departing today have been suspended. We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” the post reads.
According to Japanese media, the company may have suffered a so-called DDoS attack, aimed at overcoming and disrupting a website or server.
The network outage began at 7.24am Thursday (10.24pm GMT Wednesday), Japan Airlines said in the statement, adding that there was no impact on the safety of operations. Then “at 8:56 a.m. we temporarily isolated the router that was causing the outage,” he said.
