The second day of events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the historic Messina Conference of 1955 ended in the Aula Magna of the Rectorate of the University of Messina. The initiative, entitled “Messina Europe, 1955-2025”, anticipated the inauguration of the 477th Academic Year of the University, which will be held tomorrow at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele with the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

Rector Giovanna Spatari underlined the importance of linking academic events to historical memory: “The 70th anniversary of the Messina Conference represents an opportunity to reflect on the role of this city in the process of European construction”. The main focus of the day was dedicated to European public goods and consolidation strategies a European public space, issues that remain crucial to guarantee social cohesion and well-being.

Among the protagonists of the event, prof. Alessio Lo Giudice highlighted the relevance of the “spirit of Messina” and the need to recover it to face transnational challenges, while Professor Lina Panella drew attention to the importance of a shared European public arena, already discussed in 1955, to bring Europe closer to its citizens.

The event concluded with a round table that summarized the reflections developed in two days of debates, consolidating Messina as a historical point of reference for European integration.
