A birthday with the record: 3,823 days, that is 10 years and over six months of stay at the Quirinale and 84 years well brought for the Sicilian president. Sergio Mattarella Celebrate his anniversary without derogating from work commitments. Only in the evening will he gather in the family for a dinner with his children and his beloved grandchildren. As usual in the period preceding the summer break, Mattarella is already preparing for the Quirinale the discourse of the range he will hold during the traditional ceremony of the exchange of greetings with the parliamentary press on 30 July. Then the holidays: probably first a few days of decompression in the presidential estate of Castelporziano then the longest break at Villa Ausserer, in the municipality of Castelrotto, in South Tyrol, a place, however, already chosen in the past by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. Effectively It was a complex year for the president struggling with the growing international tensions, from Ukraine to Gaza, up to the advent of Donald Trump and the thorny problem – still everything standing – of American duties.
But not only that, Sergio Mattarella had to face a heart problem that led him to a two -day hospitalization, last April, to the Roman Hospital Santo Spirito. All solved without problems with the installation of a pacemaker that has allowed him to return to work in a very short time: since then he seems in perfect shape. Mattarella is the second president to have been re -elected to Colle after Giorgio Napolitano who, however, after two years resigned. Mattarella, on the other hand, already passed the third year by the re -election that took place in early 2022 after the political forces were unable to find convergence on another personality and names were burned on names in the votes of Parliament in joint session. A failure of the policy that has forced him to make himself available even if, he said it several times, “he would have had other plans” for his life. Just think that in his kingdom he saw six governments followed: Renzi, Gentiloni, Conte I, Conte II, Draghi and Meloni. Beloved by people – indeed from his fellow citizens, as he loves – Mattarella remains an essential point of reference for the country.
His balance, the calm tones and the paternal figure who conquered the imagination of the country led him to embody a hinge role between politics and citizens braking at least a little the wind of anti -politics that is dominating not only Italy but the whole world. Also this year several times, for example in the end -of -year speech, he invited to cohesion, to smooth the corners of the comparison and to drop the decibels of the political debate, also on the network: «Just on social media it runs too much hatred, too much anger, with a tendency to identify opponents or even enemies. Towards which – he underlined New Year’s Eve by talking to the Italians – practice forms of aggression. All modalities that distract or aggravate the difficulty of effectively dealing with the problems and daily emergencies of citizens and families: from the work that lacks differences in remuneration, to disparities ». An appeal to the good of the Republic which, we are sure, will also be the figure of next year in the moral guide of the country.
