The recognition of the state of Palestine is not a favor to Hamas, on the contrary, it “gives wrong” to terrorists and “reason to the Palestinian actors who have chosen dialogue and peace”. Faced with the criticisms of Israel and the United States, Emmanuel Macron’s France pulls straight on the decision to recognize the Palestinian state in the next UN General Assembly in September, becoming the 148th country to do it.
The most lashing was, as usual, Donald Trump who asked the topic before flying in Scotland cut short: “What Macron says doesn’t matter, he has no weight”. Echoing the accusations already aimed at the Head of the Elysée last June at the end of the G7 in Canada (“Emmanuel is always wrong”), this time the American president, however, was preparing to say that “he is a good boy”.
To define in more concrete terms the position of the United States on the subject was the secretary of state Marco Rubio who explained on X: «This reckless decision only feeds Hamas’ propaganda and hinders peace. It is a slap in the face of the victims of 7 October». Thesis rejected by the French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot who reiterated how the two-states solution is “the only way for lasting peace”. To appease the Paris initiative were instead Russia and China, as well as the Saudi Arabia that with France will preside next week a meeting in New York on the two -states solution, already scheduled last June but postponed due to the Israeli attack on Iran. Cauti on the subject showed the close allies of Macron – the German Friedrich Merz and the British Keir Starmer – who, even without criticizing the forward escape of Paris, made it known that they believed the recognition of the Palestine state premature, while Italy conditions it “to the recognition by their part of the state of Israel”, explained the minister Antonio Tajani.
The leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom then felt in the afternoon in a call that did not have the matter on the agenda, but which aimed to press Israel so that he “immediately” aimed at the “humanitarian catastrophe” in progress and open the strip “to the influx of aid”.
The government of Benyamin Netanyahu for his part continues to deny that in Gaza there is a “famine”as denounced by the UN, NGO and an increasing number of chancelleries, including Rome. But he agreed that foreign countries launch food on the strip from planes: a way already traveled at the beginning of the war, also cost the life of different civilians affected by the packages precipitated to the ground, and criticized by Hamas.
“The Gaza strip does not need aerous stunts – he commented -. It needs an open humanitarian corridor and a constant flow of aid trucks ». And after the shipwreck of the indirect interviews with Hamas sanctioned by the envoy of the White House, Steve Witkoff, Netanyahu has announced that Israel, together with the American allies, is “currently evaluating alternative options” to bring home the hostages still held back to Gaza and eliminate Hamas, considered “an obstacle to achieving an agreement”.
It is not clear what the alternatives are examined, but Trump: Hamas “did not want an agreement to give an indication. I think he wants to die, “said the president. «And this is a very, very serious thing. We have come to a point where the work will have to end ».
