If Calabria were a film it would be … an author film, with few special effects and a lot of substance. This is the image that the big names of Italian cinema return from the stage of the Magna Graecia Film Festival in which, on the fourth day, the words of Kim Rossi Stuart are echoing like a warning to which a holiday was enough to understand the essence of our land and communicate it. On the stage of Soverato, he is the one who launched an appeal “to preserve everything as it is”.
And this is also the leitmotif of yesterday’s evening, in which behind the actor’s warning we read a silent accusation to those who sell off the territories, to the US tourism and throw and the events that bring more followers than culture. Something to discuss with the big names of politics and with the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein, protagonist of the political space of the Festival (on August 1 there will be Tajani). Schlein tells how the film festivals have represented for her real training places, both cultural and personal. And then he denounces the delays in the structural reforms of the sector, which he said they slowed down the activity on the sets and put in difficulty numerous professionals: “The cinema deserves a relaunch, it is also for this reason that we have presented the proposal to found a reality that can support the audiovisual industry”.
“Immediate recognition of the state of Palestine, as already done by Spain of Sanchez, Norway, Ireland, as they are preparing to do – and I find that it is good news – Macron’s France and, news of a few hours ago, also the United Kingdom of Starmer in September”, said Schlein, interviewed by Tommaso Labbate. “I believe – continued Schlein – that it is a necessary step to make a contribution to a peace process that has stopped for a precise reason and for precise responsibilities. The crimes of the far -right government of Netanyahu in Gaza and Cisgjordania must be stopped ».
A hospitality, that of the secretary of the PD at the Festival, which triggered the reaction of opposite factions, such as Power to the People, who also in view of the arrival of Tajani at Magna Graecia (scheduled for August 1), has released a long note of protest (“Schlein and Tajani accomplices of Israel! Boicotto the Magna Graecia Film Festival!”).
An unusual mix that between cinema and politics, therefore, but which finds justification in a cultural event in which the limits of the Italian contemporary cinema context are denounced. Ideas that will find new reflections tonight. At 9:30 pm, “Flow” arrives at the Supercinema, the highly anticipated feature film by the Latvian Gints Zilbalodis, a visionary work that combines 3D animation and narration without dialogues, telling the story of a cat fighting for survival in a world submerged by the waters. In the seafront arena protagonists the women directed. At 9 pm one of the most anticipated works of the Italian competition: “Life as adults”, debut for the direction of the actress Greta Scarano, a sweet and sour comedy that reflects on the paradoxes of maturity, the female friendships and the not made choices. Guest of the evening the young interpreter Yuri Tuci. Following, the masterclass by Carolina Crescentini and with the musical performance of Camilway, a young promise of Italian pop who moves between electronic sounds and author’s ballads.
