Returning to the Kamchatka the Kracheninnikov volcano, which for the first time for over 450 years a few days after the powerful earthquake that hit the Russian peninsula. The local office of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported it.
From the mountain, more than 1,800 meters high, a column of ashes has risen which reached 6 kilometers, reads a post on Telegram. “The cloud has spread to the east, towards the Pacific Ocean,” explained the Ministry, where there are no inhabited areas and there are no tourists.
The Kamchatka peninsula, which has about thirty active volcanoes, is one of the most active seismic regions on the planet, at the meeting point between the tectonic plates of the Pacific and North America. According to the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program, the last recorded eruption of Kracheninnikov dates back to 1550. The awakening arrives after the eruption in the same area of Kliuchevskoi, the highest volcano of the Aurasia, a few days ago.
Both eruptions follow the 8.8 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday in Kamchatka, one of the strongest ever recorded in history.
