Coldiretti Calabria expresses its proximity and solidarity with the large floor cooperative and to the ALLESIA Plant company Magna Grecia SS, hard affected by the violent hailstorm that yesterday hit the Reventino plateau, between the municipalities of Decolla and Soveria Mannelli, in the province of Catanzaro. The atmospheric event has compromised in a few minutes entire horticultural cultivations in the open field – in particular potatoes, courgettes and peppers – and has damaged, given the violence and intensity of the atmospheric event, also some forest nurseries, despite the presence of protection networks.
The damage to crops, extended for about 40 hectares of territory, is serious and irreversible, since hail has cut the peduncles of the flowers, compromising its future productivity.
According to the data collected by the Demeter systems installed in the plateau farms, 108.20 mm/m² of rainfall were recorded in just 45 minutes. Demetra is the Coldiretti platform of advanced agrometeorological monitoring, capable of providing punctual and useful data to the management of risk in agriculture. A reconnaissance of the damages is now underway to accompany the farms affected in the path of reporting and management of the emergency.
The president and director of the Chz-Kr-see interprovincial federation, Fabio Borrello and Pietro Bozzo reiterate Coldiretti’s commitment and support to follow the situation closely. “Extreme episodes like this – they comment – confirm the growing vulnerability of agriculture in the face of climate change. It is increasingly necessary to guarantee agricultors adequate tools to deal with emergencies and safeguard the productive future of the territory.
