From the Public Prosecutor of Paola, led by the prosecutor Domenico Fiordalisi, a highly incisive action arrives who, in a few days, led to the seizure of five purifiers on the Tyrrhenian Cosentino. The fight against bad purification must be a priority for those who apply to lead Calabria in the coming years “. After the seizure of the Cetraro plant and the purifiers of Fuscaldo and Verbicaro – with the intervention of the Coast Guard and the carabinieri – the municipal puritors of Diamond and Cetraro were also seized, all managed by private companies.
“The investigations in progress – declare Anna Parretta, president of Legambiente Calabria, and Carlo Gaglianone, president of the Legambiente Riviera dei Cedri Circle – confirm the importance of the establishment of a section of the PAOLA prosecutor entirely dedicated to environmental crimes. An initiative wanted by the prosecutor Fiordalisi to identify and sanction more effectively forms of illegality that weigh on Calabria, Compromising ecosystems, citizens’ health and economics of the territories, starting with tourism “.
Legambiente underlines that, thanks to the voluntary work of its members, it has always been alongside the judiciary, the police and the institutions. Campaigns such as Green Green, who in July stopped in Calabria, highlight through the samples – concerning 70% mouth of rivers and channels – the critical issues of the bad or absent purification. In many cases, the sources of pollution come from the hinterland, cross the transition waters and reach the sea.
“This is a job that should not be confused, but valued because it is strongly complementary to that of Arpacal – continues Parretta and Gaglianone – whose data remain essential to establish the bathing of the coasts”.
The investigations that led to the kidnappings, also started from the analysis of the Arpacal, confirm how much Legambiente has been denounced for years: the Calabrian purification system is plagued by serious deficiencies, ranging from absent, malfunctioning or undersized purifiers, up to the houses not connected to the sewage network, without forgetting the phenomenon of illegal, civil and industrial discharges.
“The activities developed by the institutions, starting from the Calabria Region, have been important but unfortunately still not resolutive – conclude Parretta and Gaglianone -. The action of the judiciary, of the police and the ports of port is meritorious and necessary to repress the crimes and hit the managers, but it is even more essential to focus on prevention to avoid the pollution of the waterways and the Calabrian sea. By definitively resolving the critical issues of purification, it must become an absolute priority for anyone who is candidate to lead the Calabria Region in the coming years “.
