It’s called wireless pacemaker, or Leadlessand it is one of the most important innovations of modern cardiology. Since 2021 it is also available in the province of Cosenza, where it is no longer an experimental novelty but a consolidated procedure. The first plant was successfully performed in August of that year at the Cardiology of the Castrovillari hospital, directed by Giovanni Bisignani, opening the way to a diffusion that involved other ASP operating units.

The device, inserted percutaneously through the femoral vein and positioned directly in the right ventricle, drastically reduced the typical complications of traditional pacemakers: infections, fractures or disputes of the electrocates, venous thrombosis. Smaller and less invasive, it offers a quick, safe system and a battery life that in some models reaches twenty years.

An important milestone was also reached in the Spoke of Corigliano-Rossano, where the cardiologist Silvana De Bonis led the smallest pacemaker system in the world, ten times reduced compared to a conventional device. In Cetraro-Paola, under the direction of Maria Teresa Manes, the method is now an integral part of the care, contributing to an increasingly integrated provincial cardiological network.

The ASP underlines that the choice between traditional and wireless pacemakers is always up to the cardiologist, based on the patient’s clinical conditions. The formation of medical and nursing teams, supported by courses and specialist updates, has made it possible to manage autonomous and safe management of the procedure.

Since August 2021 dozens of patients have already benefited from this progress, recording less complications and a faster return to daily life.
