Vladimir Putin is not among the leaders who today gather at the United Nations, but the Russian president has made his strong and clear message arrive in New York: Moscow does not want an escalation, and indeed it is willing to extend the new start treatise, but if necessary it is able to respond to threats.

The occasion was the meeting of the Federation’s Security Council, probably convened not by chance on the day on which the high -level week of the 80th General Assembly of the UN begins. In the agendas of many bilateral meetings there will be the trespassing of the Russian jets, which the Kremlin has denied even today. And on the sidelines of the diplomatic event of the year, there is a meeting between the American president Donald Trump and the Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelensky.

Just Trump and Zelensky seem the main recipients of the messages launched today by Putin while dictating instructions to members of the Security Council.

“I would like to emphasize, and nobody should doubt that Russia is able to respond to any existing and emerging threat, not only in words but using technical-military measures”, has said in the live television speech. At the same time, Russia “is not interested in a further escalation of the voltage or foment the armament race”, he assured.

For the Russian leader, the Russian-American relationship system in the field of armament control has been completely destroyed. In addition, the West has made “destructive steps” with the nuclear powers trying to undermine dialogue instead of supporting it. And this with serious consequences: “Strategic stability unfortunately continues to deteriorate”.

Hence the olive twig: the proposal to extend by one year the new Start Treaty which should expire on February 5, 2026. “Russia is ready to continue to respect for a year the limitations contemplated by Start”, marked Putin on live television during a meeting of the Russian Security Council.

The one -year extension could be a premise of a new climate. “I believe that the implementation of the Russian initiative could be a significant contribution to the creation of a favorable atmosphere to a substantial strategic dialogue with the United States of America”, explained the Russian president. Dialogue is possible “if we create the conditions for its large -scale recovery and taking into account the entire series of efforts to normalize bilateral relationships and resolve the fundamental differences on safety”, stressed Putin.

But it is not said that you take a very different direction. It could, because if the US went on with the announced plan to create a missile defense shield in space, the current balance in strategic armaments would also jump. These “destabilizing actions” would have the effect of “reducing our part’s efforts to maintain the status quo in strategic offensive weapons. And we will react accordingly, “Putin clarified.
