“The works of” executive design and execution of the reclamation and green recovery of the abandoned industrial sites “of the former Italcitrus in Catona come alive”. The mayor Giuseppe Falcomatà with the councilor delegated to urban decorum, parks and gardens, Massimiliano Merenda, communicated in a press note. The administrators preliminarily recalled the activities carried out by the deputy mayor and former councilor for the environment, Paolo Brunetti, who allowed to reach the demolition of the former citrus processing establishment, followed by the asbestos reclamation work. The time schedule of the works is therefore underway.
“With this intervention – highlighted Falcomatà – we transform an area symbol of abandonment and degradation, also the protagonist of judicial events, into a living place, safe and accessible from the whole community. It is a further step towards a path of urban regeneration that we are carrying out in our idea of the city, restoring citizens of sociality, sport and culture to citizens. We will start with the delivery of the areas and the preparatory operations, the drafting of the asbestos work plan, the removal of waste, the demolition of buildings and floors, and then continue with the plant works: underground, the architectural works with installation furnishings, green and lighting. The intervention has the primary objective of allowing the conversion of the area of the former Italcitrus, through the elimination, primarily, of the hygiene health and environmental problems connected with the presence of asbestos concrete materials and to allow their return to the community for sport-recreational-cultural purposes “
“The goal is twofold – commented the councilor Merenda – on the one hand the desire to restore the safety and health conditions of an area that has been abandoned for too long, on the other hand returning to citizens a new eco -sustainable public space, built with solutions oriented to the saving of natural resources and respect for the environment. The project followed all the verification and validation phases provided for by the legislation, until the approval of the executive design took place in September 2025. The places that will be used as a sporting and recreational green, with a view to safety and safety of people, of safeguarding the environment and economic and social enhancement of public goods will be used.
The intervention, already included in the PON Metro 2014/2020 programming and subsequently refinanced in the context of the PN Metro Plus 2021-2027 for an amount of 1,394,786.98 euros, provides for a series of fundamental activities: the removal and disposal of the concrete-asbestos covers still present on the properties; the demolition of dilapidated and dangerous structures; cleaning and leveling of the areas, with waste disposal found; the conversion of public green spaces, with sporting, recreational and cultural functions; the installation of lighting and irrigation systems; The realization of further works to improve the usability of spaces, such as urban furnishings and children’s games. The works will have a duration of 144 natural and consecutive days.
