Pino Piromalli was admitted to the clinical center of the Milan Opera prison. The transfer would have taken place at the beginning of last week, but the news only leaked yesterday. According to what has been learned, the clinical picture of the elderly boss has worsened in recent weeks, so much so that his transfer to the clinical center was authorized to allow the doctors of the Milan penitentiary to follow him more carefully.
Piromalli has been in prison since September 23rd, when he was involved in the operation coordinated by the anti-mafia prosecutor’s office of Reggio Calabria and called “Res Tauro”. The investigation carried out by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command beheaded the alleged triumvirate who led the powerful ‘Ndrangheta family of the port city, at the top of which was the now eighty-year-old boss. Pino Piromalli had been released from prison only four years earlier, after 22 years locked up in 41bis.

His return to Gioia Tauro coincided with his return to the top of the gang, not without repercussions and shocks. Increasingly tense relations with his nephew Gioacchino Piromalli born in ’69, for how he had managed the clan in his absence and above all for the division of illicit proceeds which, according to the boss, would have penalized his close family unit. Pino Piromalli’s invectives had not even spared his brothers Antonio, born in ’39 and Gioacchino, born in ’34.
The name of the investigation by the DDA of Reggio Calabria, “Res Tauro”, summarizes the restoration imposed by the elderly boss in the port city and in the gang. From extortion to relationships with other clans in the area, up to entrepreneurs who wanted to open a commercial business in Gioia Tauro: everything had to be decided by him. And the investigators reconstructed Pino Piromalli’s four years of freedom thanks to the bugs placed in his home in Via Monacelli and in the cars of his most trusted collaborators. They learned everything that ended up in the precautionary custody order from his voice, while he was discussing with his wife (not involved in the “Res Tauro” operation but under house arrest for the “Hybris” investigation).
After four years of investigations, the Carabinieri and the DDA have closed the circle by sending Pino Piromalli back to prison. His lawyers, Francesco Nizzari and Domenico Infantino, are preparing the appeal to the Court of Freedom and, in all likelihood, the boss’s health conditions will be one of the central points of the request. In the meantime, however, the dates of the hearing before the TDL have been set for Gioacchino Piromalli, next November 5th, and for his father Antonio, on October 29th.
