Immediate help to deal with high fuel costs. The 20% tax credit for fishing companies comes into force on 19 March, a measure launched by the government to support a sector struggling with sharply increasing costs.

Measurement and resources

The measure, approved at the last Council of Ministers, provides for a total allocation of 10 million euros and concerns expenses incurred in the months of March, April and May 2026.

The objective is to contain the impact of energy price increases on the daily activity of vessels and ensure greater stability in the fishing supply chain.

Gallo: “Concrete answer”

The importance of the intervention is underlined by the regional councilor for Agriculture and Fisheries Gianluca Gallo, who speaks of “a concrete response to a sector which, even in Calabria, plays an essential role from an economic and employment point of view”.

“Our navies – he adds – are facing a complex phase, marked by increasing costs and increasingly reduced margins”.

Sector under pressure

The cost of fuel represents one of the main expenditure items for fishing companies, significantly impacting the economic sustainability of activities at sea.

“The tax credit – highlights Gallo – is a tangible support that allows us to reduce costs and avoid repercussions on the entire supply chain and on consumers”.

“Structural interventions are needed”

For the councilor this is a step in the right direction, but not enough. “It is necessary to continue working to accompany the fishing sector towards greater economic sustainability and competitiveness”, he concludes, reiterating the strategic value of fishing for Calabria and for the entire agri-food sector.
