The Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas has officially handed over the single border inspection post of the Port of Gioia Tauro to the Ministry of Health. The delivery was formalized through a loan for use contract signed by the president Paolo Piacenza and the Uvac/Pcf director for Campania, Calabria, and Sicily of the Ministry of Health, Alessandro Raffaele. Built by the Port System Authority of the southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, for an amount of 2.7 million euros, the new border control post represents, we read in a note, «the concrete result of a collaboration project between the institutions, the result of a significant infrastructural intervention aimed at supporting the economic and productive development of the Calabrian port area, in full compliance with public health and prevention policies».
Functions and objectives of the Border Control Post
The new infrastructure, located near the operational area of the MCT Terminal, was built according to current regulations and in close collaboration with the competent administrations. The establishment of the ‘Border Control Post’, the single border control point for the different categories of products and live animals, replaces the previous access structures, guaranteeing greater efficiency and speed in inspection operations, aimed at verifying compliance with European regulations on food, feed, health and animal welfare.
Commercial impact and international logistics
«With the activation of the new border control post, the port – it should be noted – is equipped with a cutting-edge infrastructure that responds to the logistical needs required by modern international agreements, such as that between the EU and Mercosur, called to strengthen economic, geopolitical and environmental cooperation between the continents. In fact, an intensification of international trade flows is expected, with advantages for national and European operators and for consumers, who will be able to benefit from a greater variety and sustainability of goods.
Technical characteristics and division of spaces
The structure extends over an area of 4,000 square metres, divided into three retractable warehouses divided into 34 prefabricated modules, of which: 22 modules intended for the Border Control Post, 6 modules for the activities of the Phytosanitary Service, 3 modules for office use for the Customs Agency and 3 modules for office use for the Guardia di Finanza. Furthermore, the plant is equipped with a 190 m2 cold room, divided into spaces at different temperatures, to protect the health and quality of the goods.”
