On Wednesday 6 May at 9:00, at the Sala Cinema Unical, there will be a special screening of the documentary “Giulio Regeni – Tutto il male del mondo”, produced by Fandango and Ganesh Produzioni, accompanied by a debate dedicated to the themes of freedom of study and research. The event is organized by the University of Calabria as part of the “Universities for Giulio Regeni” initiative, promoted by Senator for life and scientist Elena Cattaneo ten years after the young researcher’s disappearance in Egypt: 76 universities, 15 thousand people involved for two months of meetings and screenings on freedom of research.

The initiative was presented today in the Senate during a press conference attended, among others, by Senator Cattaneo, Giulio Regeni’s parents, the lawyer Alessandra Ballerini, the director of the documentary Simone Manetti, the authors Emanuele Cava and Matteo Billi and the Rector of the University of Calabria, Gianluigi Greco, whose presence ideally represented the commitment and involvement of the universities of Southern Italy. “Universities for Giulio Regeni” consists of a cycle of events that will be held between April and May 2026 in 76 universities throughout Italy for an audience of over 15 thousand people, including students, researchers, academic staff and citizens.

«Ten years after the death of Giulio Regeni, the university world continues to question itself on the profound value of freedom of research, which can never be taken for granted – declares the Rector of the University of Calabria, Gianluigi Greco -. Participating in this initiative means strongly reiterating that knowledge must be able to be pursued without conditioning, in every part of the world. The presence of Unical in the Senate testifies to a commitment that we feel is a collective responsibility, especially as an academic community in the South.”

The event on 6 May 2026, from 9:00 to 12:00 at the Cinema Room of the University of Calabria, includes the screening of the documentary followed by the debate “There is no research without freedom”. After the viewing, speakers will be Matteo Billi, co-author of the documentary, Andrea Pecoraro for UNHCR Italy, Martina Luzzi of the Association of Doctoral Students and Research Doctors in Italy and the journalist Daniele Autieri; the meeting will be moderated by Donatella Loprieno.

«The story of Giulio Regeni, thanks to the courage and strength of his family – recalls Senator Cattaneo – did not end with the discovery of his lifeless body in Cairo, ten years ago: on the contrary, Giulio continues to live and ‘do things’ through a movement of people who recognize themselves in the fundamental value of freedom. The same one that Giulio defended as a scholar.”

«We are honored and grateful for this initiative – declared Giulio’s parents, Paola Deffendi and Claudio Regeni – which involves numerous universities, with professors, students and doctoral students who, we remember, must always be protected. The documentary shows both the figure of Giulio as an upright and passionate researcher and the violation of his rights.”
