For decades the various currents of the “White Whale” – when the DC was the permanent center of gravity of national, regional and local politics – clashed furiously, however, in the end always finding an agreement, a point of balance, an internal “pax”, in any case a compromise. Today the party, which bears the name of Christian Democracy, appears torn apart and, on the banks of the Strait, a sensational division has been reached, followed by an equally sensational request for expulsion, or rather expulsions.
Very quick background: Giovanni Caruso, the only municipal councilor in the DC quota, the bearer of a significant package of votes, after the choice made by the party to support, together with the centre-right, the candidacy of Marcello Scurria, decided to present himself on a list in support of Federico Basile, with twenty-two other candidates, including Helga Corrao, partner of the former municipal councilor Pippo Scattareggia. Even the latter, after a few years of break with De Luca and Basile, chose the path of “returning home”. At this point, the vice-president of the DC of Messina, Pippo Previti, sent a letter to the provincial president, to the regional leaders and to the Board of Arbitrators, asking for a measure to expel from the party those members of the DC who support a candidate different from that indicated by the regional centre-right coalition. And, therefore, Previti thunders, both Giovanni Caruso and Helga Corrao are “out”.
