«The construction of the wet waste fractionation plant in Mili Marina is a clear stretch. The health of citizens and the safety of the urban fabric cannot be trampled on by a project that was imposed from above in an unacceptable way.” The words are pronounced in a peremptory tone by the centre-right mayoral candidate, Marcello Scurria, at the end of an inspection and a meeting with some citizens and residents in the area affected by the planned construction of the plant. «I will ask the regional councilor for the Environment Giusy Savarino for a comparison – adds Scurria – to highlight the inadequacy of a project that does not take into account current and existing regulations and citizens. The plant was initially planned in Santa Teresa di Riva. And that is where it will have to be built, certainly not in southern Messina among homes and in the immediate vicinity of a sports hall. The system they want to impose is a real ecological bomb that would be grafted onto an area where there is already a purifier which often pollutes the air and which presents very serious critical issues. The outgoing Administration acted with the usual arrogance. We listen to the citizens, their motivated fear of living next to an eco-monster is a priority.”
Danilo Lo Giudice, mayor of Santa Teresa di Riva and former president of the Srr Messina Metropolitan Area, immediately responds to “Marcello here”. «This time too Scurria made a mistake. I don’t know on what solitary walk came the vision of Santa Teresa di Riva indicated as the destination of the plant planned in Mili”.
