Matteo Berrettini wins and convinces. The Roman tennis player enters the round of 16 of the «Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters», the third «1000» of the season, with a prize pool of 6,309,095 euros, which is being played on the red clay of the Monte-Carlo Country Club, in the Principality of Monaco. After having benefited on his debut from the withdrawal of the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, number 85 ATP, halfway through the first set with a score of 4-0, Berrettini (90th in the ranking) overwhelmed the Russian Daniil Medvedev, number 10 ATP and seventh seed, with a score of 6-0, 6-0, gained in just 51 minutes of play. For a place in the quarterfinals the Italian will face the winner of the match between the Brazilian Fonseca and the French Ronderknech.

“One of my best performances”

«It is certainly one of the best performances of my career. I think I only missed three shots and moreover against an annoying player like Daniil.”
Matteo Berrettini imposed Medvedev’s first knockout with a double 6-0 since the Russian became a professional and after the prestigious success, which projected him into the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo, he admits: «I didn’t expect to win like this, it’s obvious, it doesn’t happen often but at the same time I kept my concentration high because I know that tennis is a strange sport and so I continued to push».
«My weapons worked and after the first game in which I canceled two break points I felt that I was playing better and better. There was the risk of losing concentration and I knew that everything could change in the space of a couple of points – the Italian then added – I always hope to have a good run in tournaments, but the reality is that I need matches like these, I need to win, to lose and to digest defeats. I need time and confidence, things that are built during training and I hope that the time to experience a good tournament comes very soon.”
