Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was in the Chamber to deliver her “information on the government’s action”. The speech lasted just under an hour, at the end of which the majority exploded in long applause. Full government, among the opposition benches the leaders of the broad camp Elly Schlein, Giuseppe Conte, Nicola Fratoianni and Angelo Bonelli. The Prime Minister also gave the briefing.

The Prime Minister quotes Schlein: ‘Stubbornly united on US-Europe relations’

On the relationship between the United States and Europe and the unity of the West, “I would say, borrowing a phrase dear to Elly Schlein, that we are stubbornly unitary. And if you can afford to be unitary with respect to the colorful political forces that make up the broad field, I will be able to afford it with respect to Europe and the United States who have been together for a long, long time”. “We are ‘stubbornly Western’ – added the prime minister – because only if the West is united can it be a force capable of having its say on the world stage. And because without that unity, we, not others, would be weaker”.

‘Subordinate to Trump? Italian position the same for 80 years’

“Italy’s international position was not invented by this government – underlines Meloni – but it has been the same for about 80 years now. I say this to respond before the now obvious refrain about the subordination of the undersigned to the American President Trump or the even more obvious one entitled ‘Meloni chooses between Trump and Europe’ goes on stage”.

Meloni: undeniable moment of difficulty in EU-US relations

«It is undeniable that we are experiencing a moment of particular difficulty in relations between Europe and the United States, but it is equally undeniable that the current American administration has accelerated a path that had been widely announced by previous administrations, both Republican and Democratic: progressively averting its gaze from Europe to dedicate itself to global competition with China, therefore choosing the Indo-Pacific as a priority geostrategic quadrant». Thus Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. «A clear trajectory that the European leaderships of the recent past have long, and in my opinion guiltily, preferred not to grasp. Including those who governed in Italy, and who were satisfied with a pat on the back or an endorsement tweet when they formed a new government”, says the Prime Minister.

The appeal to the opposition: ‘You can’t get away with saying it’s all my fault’

“The ‘international’ scenario no longer allows anyone to get away with saying it’s all Meloni’s fault, even the increase in global oil shortfalls.” The Prime Minister said this after speaking about the role of the opposition. «I am counting on you a lot, fellow senators, in this debate because in the Chamber I have heard many insults, insults, accusations, a lot of demagogy and almost no real proposals and in one of the most delicate phases that Italy is facing, except on parental leave for which there is no telling where to get the resources».

‘With extra duties on Hormuz there will be imponderable economic consequences’

We need the “full restoration of freedom of movement in the Strait of Hormuz which must not be subject to any form of restriction as seems to have happened in the last few hours: it remains one of the most critical points in the implementation phase of the agreement because if Iran were to obtain the power to apply extra duties to transits in the Strait this could still lead to imponderable economic consequences”.

‘With the field cleared of controversy, I challenge you on real politics’

“The majority is solid and cohesive” and I am “proud of deputy prime ministers Tajani and Salvini”. Recently “I asked for a step back” from some government officials who had also “worked well. They were not simple or painless choices” but “we have once again put the interest of the nation before that of the party. We don’t have time to waste in endless and specious controversies, which shift the debate” which must remain centered on the “solutions necessary for citizens. Once the field has been cleared, I challenge you on real politics”.

‘The government is there until the end, let’s not escape’

“Let them know that the government is there, in the midst of its functions determined to do its best, even better, until the last day of its mandate, we will not run away, we will not retreat, we will not take shelter by making citizens pay for the usual palace games: we will govern as serious people do at peace with their conscience”

‘Neither resignation nor reshuffle’

“No resignations, no reshuffles”, “we don’t need new programmatic lines, because ours have always been written in the government program” and “we will govern for five years as we have committed to doing”. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this in her “information on the government’s action”, in the Chamber.

‘Don’t abandon the justice reform worksite, let’s collaborate’

“The hope I express is that the construction site of this reform will not be abandoned as some probably hope, because the problems on the table remain and we have the duty to find concrete, courageous and effective solutions, possibly in a climate of collaboration certainly not against the judiciary but in favor of a judiciary free from political and ideological conditioning”. Thus the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in her briefing to the Chamber on government activity regarding the justice reform rejected by the referendum.

Meloni, the Anti-Mafia commission deals with infiltration into parties, including FdI

«I also challenge you on this, not only is it usual to interfere in the work of the commissions» but «I take the liberty of asking the parliamentary anti-mafia commission to deal with the attempts of organized crime to infiltrate the parties, including FdI. While some use the topic for propaganda, I am interested in building antibodies on a topic that concerns us all. And I don’t accept that my sacrifices can be used for the interests of those I’ve been fighting since 19 July 1992 without any ifs or buts and I don’t accept lessons on this topic.”

Around May 1st, the housing plan will be presented in the Council of Ministers, 100 thousand homes in 10 years

«In view of the anniversary of May 1st, the Council of Ministers will finally approve the measures necessary to implement in Italy that vast housing plan that we have been working on for some time. A robust, structural plan, which aims to make over 100 thousand homes available in public housing and at controlled prices over the next ten years.” Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this in her «information on the government’s action», in the Chamber.

Now more security, ten thousand auxiliaries of carabinieri and police

«Personally, I am not satisfied with the results, it is the first duty of the State, we must be able to have a more effective impact and for this reason we intend, for example, to increase the presence of law enforcement agencies in the area» by reorganizing «the administrative activity to have more personnel on the streets and we are working to introduce the figure of the auxiliary of the Carabinieri and the police forces by hiring 10 thousand units of volunteers in pre-arranged stops to carry out security and control activities in the area».
