In Messina, popular devotion is renewed in the name of tradition on the occasion of the festival dedicated to San Francesco di Paola, patron saint of seafarers and a figure deeply rooted in the city’s identity.

The path of the simulacrum between faith and music

The second Sunday of Easter saw a large participation of faithful in the solemn procession of the simulacrum, which started from the sanctuary in Viale della Libertà. A long procession crossed the streets of the parish area between songs, prayers and demonstrations of faith, accompanied by the musical band and a transversal presence of citizens of all ages.

The symbolic stages and the role of the brotherhoods

Among the most significant moments, the stops in Piazza Castronovo and the church of Gesù and Maria del Buon Viaggio al Ringo, symbolic stages of a journey that combines spirituality and popular tradition.

The participation of the confraternities was also important: in addition to the one dedicated to the Saint, led by the new governor Maria Grazia Oliva, numerous local confraternities took part in the procession, together with the members of the diocesan interconfraternal centre, testifying to a living and shared ecclesial communion.

The spiritual message: charity and trust

During the celebrations, the parish priest Don Luciano Zampetti underlined the relevance of the Saint’s message, indicating in his life a concrete example of charity and solidarity. A call also echoed by Archbishop Giovanni Accolla, who in the homily of the solemn mass highlighted the strength of trust in God embodied by Saint Francis, capable – according to tradition – of entrusting himself totally to Providence until the famous crossing of the Strait on his cloak.

A bond that is renewed

A testimony that continues to speak to the present and which, year after year, renews the link between the city and its history.
