“Action saves lives”: IRCCS Bonino Pulejo Messina on the front line for World Hand Hygiene Day

A simple gesture that can halve the risk of infections: hand hygiene. Next May 5, 2026 the 18th World Day dedicated to this fundamental practice will be celebrated, andIRCCS Bonino Pulejo Neurolesi Center responds to the WHO’s appeal by joining the campaign “Action Saves Lives” – Action saves lives.

Prevention and safety: the numbers of success

According to data from the World Health Organization, correct hand hygiene is the most effective tool for reducing up to 50% of infections preventable related to care (HAI). The objective of the 2026 edition is clear: to guarantee the safety of patients and operators through the implementation of good clinical practices and awareness of the so-called “5 WHO Moments” (from contact with the patient to management of the surrounding environment).

The initiatives at the “Piedmont” garrison

To translate theory into practice, the IRCCS Healthcare Related Infection Control Committee (CCICA) organized an awareness morning at the main entrance of thePiedmont Hospital.

  • Info point and gadgets: Information materials and gadgets will be distributed to involve citizens and caregivers.

  • Videos and Training: Explanatory films on the correct techniques will be shown.

  • Audits in departments: The experts will carry out targeted checks in the inpatient operating units, using the official WHO evaluation sheets to verify adherence to the protocols.

Management’s comment

“Hand hygiene is not a banal gesture, but a clinical act in all respects”declared the Director General of the IRCCS, Maurizio Lanza. “It is the first and most powerful weapon to protect the most fragile patients and our operators. With this day we want to reiterate that prevention is a shared responsibility: every action counts. As IRCCS we invest daily in safety and training; the commitment of May 5th is concrete proof of our desire to bring the culture of prevention inside and outside the departments”.
