The Councilor for Legality and Security of the Calabria Region, Antonio Montuoro, chaired an important meeting with the Regional Coordination Structure of the Local Police Services, launching an operational discussion aimed at defining the guidelines for the relaunch of the Corps in the area.
The following participated in the initiative: the Regional Manager, lawyer. Elvira Costantino, the commanders of the Local Police Commands of the Provincial Capitals, the Commander of the Local Police of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, the Commander of the Local Police of the Province of Cosenza, the Commanders of the Local Police of the Municipality of Casignana and of the Municipality of San Giovanni In Fiore as experts.
Training and adaptation to regional standards
At the center of the meeting was the need to strengthen skills and organisation, with particular attention to adapting to regional standards. Ample space was dedicated to the topic of staff training, considered a strategic lever for improving the effectiveness of the operators’ daily action.
In line with the provisions of regional law 18/2015, the Region has confirmed the availability of specific resources intended exclusively for professional development. In the coming months, the competent regional sector will start a survey of training needs, directly involving the Commands, with the aim of building targeted educational paths that are in line with real operational needs.
The priorities of the territories: new hires and uniforms
During the meeting, the commanders welcomed the invitation to represent the critical issues of the territories, identifying two main priorities: on the one hand, the strengthening of initial training for new hires, through intensive courses capable of providing adequate technical and regulatory tools; on the other, the need to increase the funds allocated to local authorities for the adaptation of uniforms to regional regulations, so as to guarantee greater decorum and uniformity throughout the Calabrian territory.
Councilor Montuoro expressed full willingness to follow up on the requests that emerged, pledging to offer maximum support.
The Local Police as a safeguard of legality
Also underlining the value of the meeting was the regional director of the local police, Dr. Elvira Costantino, who highlighted the climate of collaboration and dialogue that emerged during the work: “The local police represents the first point of contact between institutions and citizens. Investing in their professionalism and their tools means strengthening security and legality in the area”.
Operational tools: the new handbook on video surveillance
“The objective – declared Montuoro – is to build tailor-made training courses, capable of concretely responding to the critical issues that operators face every day in the field. The decision to set up a technical working group for the drafting of a handbook on video surveillance, which will provide clear guidelines for the installation and management of the systems, in full compliance with privacy legislation, thus avoiding risks of errors or sanctions for local authorities, also fits in this direction”.
The meeting ended with the shared commitment to maintain a constant dialogue, opening a new phase of synergy between the Calabria Region and the leaders of the local police forces.
