The road system in Calabria changes on the occasion of the fourth stage of the 109th Giro d’Italia, scheduled for Tuesday 12 May along the Catanzaro-Cosenza route. Anas has announced a broad plan of temporary closures and diversions which will affect the main road arteries of the provinces of Catanzaro and Cosenza, as well as some junctions of the A2 “Mediterranean Motorway”.
The limitations will come into effect approximately between 11.30am and 3.00pm, a time slot during which traffic will be suspended along various sections affected by the passage of the pink race. The road management plan has been agreed with law enforcement agencies and local authorities.
The SS 280 dei Due Mari is particularly affected
Among the most affected roads is the SS280 Dir, where traffic coming from Catanzaro Lido and the SS106 Var towards Lamezia Terme, the airport, the railway station and the A2 will be diverted at the Germaneto roundabout along the SP48, with a subsequent return to the SS280 via the Sarrottino junction. On the SP48 there will also be restrictions for heavy vehicles and exceptional transports exceeding 4.20 meters in height or 15 meters in length, which will be directed towards the SS106 Var.
Disturbances are also expected along the SS280 “Dei Due Mari”. Traffic coming from Lamezia Terme and heading to Catanzaro will be diverted onto the SS280 Dir near the Germaneto junction. However, the University Hospital, the regional Citadel, the Civil Protection, Catanzaro Lido and the city center will remain accessible.
During the closure period, however, it will not be possible to reach the industrial area of Marcellinara from the state road. However, the commercial area of Maida and the internal municipalities will be accessible via the southern coplanar connected to the SP87.
Important limitations also on the SS18 “Tirrena Inferiore”. Traffic coming from south to north will be diverted near the former Sir area, while motorists heading towards Lamezia Terme and Catanzaro will be able to use the A2 as a recommended alternative route.
For heavy vehicles exceeding four meters in height, parking in the former Sir area will be mandatory until the end of the event. Furthermore, southbound traffic on the SS18 will be banned in the stretch between Campora San Giovanni and Palazzo, in the Lamezia Terme area.
The restrictions in the province of Cosenza
The restrictions will also concern the province of Cosenza, with temporary closures on the SS18 in the stretch between Amantea and San Lucido during the passage of the cycling caravan.
Anas invites motorists heading towards the centers of the Tyrrhenian Sea of Cosenza to favor the use of the A2 “Autostrada del Mediterraneo” and the alternative connections guaranteed by the SS283 “Delle Terme” and the SS107 “Silana Crotonese”.
Also pay attention to the Falerna, Lamezia Terme and Pizzo motorway junctions, which will be managed in dynamic mode with possible temporary closures in both directions of travel. In the event of heavy traffic or the impossibility of stopping for heavy vehicles, the Falerna junction could be closed completely, forcing users to continue towards the subsequent junctions.
To update motorists in real time, Anas will also implement communication on the variable message signs present along the motorway network.
