74.9 million euros from the European Union Solidarity Fund to Italy for the restoration and recovery of infrastructure damaged by cyclone Harry, which hit the southern regions in particular in January 2026. The news was given by the Calabrian MEP Giusi Princi, who expressed satisfaction with the approval of the resolution by the European Parliament, meeting in plenary in Strasbourg, with 651 votes in favour. “Europe is there and shows that it knows how to transform solidarity into concrete support for the affected communities,” Princi says in a statement.

A 489 million package for four countries

Overall, explains the MEP, the resolution has released 489 million euros for Italy, Portugal, Spain and Malta. The resources will contribute to the restoration of areas affected by bad weather and the recovery of essential infrastructure and public services. «From the first hours of the event we have been committed, together with the other MEPs, to speed up the process of granting the Solidarity Fund requested by Italy, to protect the regions involved», underlines Princi. According to the MEP, the vote confirms the Union’s ability to translate its principles into tangible interventions to support communities called upon to face particularly difficult situations.

«We cannot only intervene after disasters»

Princi also recalls the need to combine aid for recovery with a prevention strategy. «What happened in Calabria and the South recalls, at the same time, the need to overcome an exclusively emergency logic», he observes. «We cannot limit ourselves to intervening after disasters: we must invest in prevention, infrastructure safety and climate resilience».
