A dramatic episode took place in the early afternoon of today on the Vibo area section of the A2 Mediterranean motorway, near the Pizzo junction. According to initial reconstructions, a 46-year-old VR man made an extreme gesture by throwing himself from the large motorway bridge.

Immediately after the incident was reported, the rescue machine was activated promptly: the firefighters, the police and the 118 health personnel arrived on site, supported by the arrival of the air ambulance. Despite the speed of the intervention, the doctors could not help but confirm the man’s death, caused by the terrible impact.

Traffic in haywire

Due to the rescue operations and the necessary investigations by the authorities, road traffic along the motorway towards Reggio Calabria suffered serious repercussions, remaining temporarily blocked.

That stretch of viaduct is unfortunately already known to the local news for similar and painful events which in the past have shattered other young lives. Precisely to counter the recurrence of such tragedies, the structure had previously been the subject of safety measures, with the installation of special protective barriers aimed at inhibiting access to the parapets.
