«The results of this electoral round in Calabria give us a clear picture, which does not allow any of us to take refuge in convenient turns of phrase. There is an evident political fact, which as a regional spokesperson for Green Europe I express with pride but also with a deep sense of responsibility: the Green and Left Alliance continues its constant and growing growth in our territory, consolidating itself as a credible point of reference for those who ask for a just ecological transition and an intransigent defense of social rights”. This is what Giuseppe Campana, regional spokesperson for Europa Verde/AVS, declared in also announcing the convocation of the regional executive today at 6pm, with the aim of analyzing the progress of the polls.

«The clear demonstration of this trust is the election of Demetrio Delfino to the city council in Reggio Calabria. My congratulations go to Demetrio and, above all, thanks for having been able to interpret our vision with that seriousness and roots that have always distinguished him. His seat – underlines Campana – will be a guarantee for the environmental and social battles that await us on the shores of the Strait. Similarly, we look with great satisfaction to Roggiano Gravina, where the election of Francesco Zappone as Mayor rewards a significant administrative project. I am linked to Francesco not only by esteem for his human qualities and administrative abilities, but by the profound awareness of a strong and shared political harmony. Roggiano Gravina finds a solid guide, and the fate of our party will only benefit from the closeness and constant dialogue with a figure of his caliber.”

«However, political elegance requires you to look beyond your own backyard. It would not be honest, and it would not be like us, to pretend that these geometric and localized successes erase the big picture. The center-left emerges from this round with a resounding defeat, a verdict that does not allow appeals or superficial justifications. Rejoicing by waving our flags in the midst of an overall retreat of the coalition – explains the regional spokesperson for Green Europe/AVS – would be an exercise in political myopia that does not belong to us. This defeat raises a series of urgent and no longer postponable questions. We must ask ourselves, with radical frankness, where have we lost contact with the real needs of the Calabrians? Why was our overall proposal unable to become a barrier and an alternative?”

«The progressive rooting of AVS – concludes Giuseppe Campana – demonstrates that when the issues are clear, the candidates credible and the battles recognisable, citizens respond. We have to start again from here. Our growing result is not a point of arrival, but a responsibility: that of being the cornerstone of a reconstruction of the alternative in Calabria, which puts aside tactics and returns to speaking the language of reality.”
