Four mayors of the Vibonese area, whose administrations were previously dissolved due to mafia infiltration, are among those elected to lead the same number of municipalities called to vote on Sunday and Monday. The electoral round was also particularly monitored by the Prefecture of Vibo Valentia and the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission due to the presence of these candidates.

In Tropea, Giovanni Macrì was reconfirmed as first citizen, whose previous administration was dissolved due to mafia infiltration in April 2024 with the dissolution later confirmed by the TAR and the Council of State. A request for Macrì’s ineligibility for two electoral rounds made by the Ministry of the Interior is currently pending before the Court of Vibo. Furthermore, in recent days, the parliamentary anti-mafia commission declared the candidate for mayor Giovanni Macrì and the candidates for the Tropea municipal council Greta Trecate and Caterina Marzolo (on the list led by Macrì) “unpresentable”.

In San Gregorio d’Ippona, however, Pasquale Farfaglia was re-elected mayor, whose administration was dissolved due to mafia infiltration in 2007, with dissolution confirmed by the TAR and the Council of State, while in Acquaro the mayor Giuseppe Barilaro won, dissolved due to mafia in September 2023 and with dissolution definitively confirmed by the TAR. Finally, in San Calogero, victory as mayor for Nicola Brosio, dissolved due to mafia infiltration in 2013 and here too with the dissolution becoming definitive.
