The 13 workers of the Cantieri navali dello Stretto, a company of the Caronte & Tourist group, will be at work next week, for whom the company had announced dismissal in mid-April with effect from 1 June. The layoffs were in fact frozen until July 31st. From now until that date, the unions and the company will negotiate in search of shared solutions. This is the outcome of today’s meeting between company top management, the unions and the president of the port authority Francesco Rizzo.

Fiom Cgil is satisfied and, in recognizing “the positive role of mediation exercised by President Rizzo”, points out that “the objective now is to maintain jobs”, say Francesco Foti, general secretary of Fiom Cgil Sicily, Daniele David, general secretary of Fiom Messina, Serafino Biondo, regional shipbuilding coordinator and Francesco Verboso RSU at Cantieri. “Thirteen families – they add – can now breathe a sigh of relief. It is a victory – they underline – which now needs to be followed up with positive solutions”. After the announcement of the layoffs (9 out of 13 workers are Fiom members) the mobilization began and a strike was called. “These were unjustified dismissals – argue Foti, David, Biondo and Verboso – and the solidarity of all the workers, who later also gave rise to a spontaneous demonstration, was total. We believe that the shipbuilding industry – underline the trade unionists – is susceptible to development, which makes the dismissals even more unjustified”.
