In Messina there was no history. The centre-left emerged with broken bones, the centre-right fared no better. Also because there is one fact: the few muscles (and “preference champions”) remained almost only in the area that refers to Francantonio Genovese who, although he recorded 2 thousand votes less than in the 2022 municipal elections, was the second best list, despite not having been able to count on the assists enjoyed by, for example, Fratelli d’Italia which in the city, compared to 2022, recorded a decline, despite being in the national government. And probably, we expected, it would travel on other percentages…
Not even the contribution – superficial or not – of those parties that hold the reins of the national and regional government, has therefore been able to reduce a wave that for some time, in the city and in the province, with its transversal risk in all neighborhoods, in all social classes and in all parties, has been training to reach as far as possible and which, between fake steps forward and backward and various winks, has nevertheless adopted a strategy in the city that works, despite the premature resignation of Federico Basile. We are stronger now, but… how long will the Bulgarian majority in the council last? Something will be understood almost immediately, when after the appointments to the council and participation, the discontented ones will be left out of the puzzle… Because these elections – like it or not – have also given weight to those who, until now, have had positions and trust, without going through the polls…
It certainly makes sense that De Luca’s strategy hit the mark, due to the errors of others and his own skill, for the first time, even in the Tyrrhenian area, and moreover, in an almost impregnable fiefdom like Barcelona.
While on the Ionian the leader of the South calls North he probably feels some backlash: because in Giardini Puccio’s advance was blocked with a sensational fact: the Center-right and Center-left together against the South calls North. And then there is the anomalous Alì case… With a “family quarrel” (to which the tactics of “Scateno” have accustomed us anyway) where the winner between the two candidates orbiting around De Luca was not, however, the one who among the supporting symbols had that of South calls North. Maybe details. But two clues almost always prove it. Between Giardini Naxos and Alì we certainly cannot speak of a crisis of rejection, but it would be interesting at this moment to feel the pulse of the Naxiotes’ neighbors, that is, those Taormina residents who have De Luca as mayor.
The results of Messina and Barcelona will however allow De Luca to be able to “navigate a little more calmly” in the Messina area and better manage the expectations of the horde of candidates who have “participated” and are “participating” in the South Calls North cause. Of course, Giardini would have been useful and the Ionica “rebeling” is not a good sign. But in reality, no very bad ones came from the other municipalities in which De Luca chose to get involved.
If in Messina and its province the leader of the South calls North has focused on one colour, in Sicily more than a party, his has been politically elastic: ready to stretch out, both to the right and to the left. Experiments or mere convenience? With De Luca the important thing is the result. And if you make a mistake, “you don’t lose”, you learn and start again. Yesterday, in Messina, with the resignation and clear reconfirmation of Basile. Now the chips shift to Palermo.
