Four symbolic works of the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, the Head of the Philosopher and the Head of Basel from the Porticello wreck, the Kouros of Reggio Calabria and the Head of the Acrolith of Apollo Aleo, will be exhibited until 30 August in «Inspirations. Italian Lives of Greek Art”, one of the most important international exhibitions of 2026 at the Acropolis of Athens, inaugurated yesterday.

The collaboration between Italy and Greece

The exhibition project was born as part of the institutional collaboration between the Ministries of Culture of Italy and Greece, and was developed by the Department for the valorisation of cultural heritage of the Ministry of Culture, under the direction of Alfonsina Russo, in collaboration with the Acropolis Museum, led by Nikolaos Stampolidis.

The MArRC will welcome, from October to December 2026, the second stage of the exhibition project, bringing these masterpieces back to Reggio Calabria together with unique archaeological finds testifying to Greek art, including the Cup of Nestor, the Crater of Euphronius, the Ludovisi Throne and the Maiden of Anzio.

The words of Minister Giuli

«This exhibition – said Minister Giuli at the inauguration – will not stop here, and this is another reason for happiness because exactly as Greek culture will travel, it will go to Reggio Calabria, which not by chance was one of the first colonies of Magna Graecia, and is the traveling symbol of this millenary commonality between civilisations».

Sudano: «An extraordinary opportunity to enhance the Calabrian heritage»

«The presence of our works in Athens and their return to Reggio Calabria within this great international project – declares the Director of the MArRC Fabrizio Sudano – confirm the role of the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria as a protagonist of Mediterranean cultural networks. It is an extraordinary opportunity to enhance the Calabrian heritage in a global dimension and, at the same time, to return it to the public enriched by new reading perspectives”.
