At the instigation of the central and regional Penitentiary Administration, operations began today to remove the plexiglass shields fixed to the windows of the overnight rooms of the “Sergio Cosmai” penitentiary institute in Cosenza, installed in 2021 to prevent inmates’ contact with the outside of the institute. These screens represented a notable limitation to the passage of natural light and air, as well as increasing the internal temperature of the overnight rooms, which was already unsustainable due to the great heat of this period.
The Regional Superintendent expresses satisfaction with the speed with which the Department accepted the removal proposal and believes that it is a significant step towards the construction of constitutionally oriented detention, which respects the dignity of each inmate, as provided for in Article 27 of the Constitution. It is just one of the initiatives that the Penitentiary Administration is implementing to guarantee the guests of Calabrian institutions dignity and respect for personal rights, even in conditions of limitations on freedom.
