Can an absolute dedication to art replace life itself? A doubt that emerges more and more powerful along the dramaturgical lines of The Mother (Shakespearean Nude)new production by Officine Dagoruk, performed on Monday 3 August at Monte di Pietà. The director Daniele Gonciaruk, also the author of the text, offers a reflection on the sense of loss and the price to pay when a passion becomes immersive and invasive to the point of supplanting any other life goal.
From research with students to the final draft
The work, born from an idea of the director himself, took shape in the first draft from intense research and improvisation with the school’s actors, to be subsequently developed and rewritten by Gonciaruk in its definitive form. The result is an original dramaturgy that dialogues deeply with the Shakespearean universe, while maintaining a completely autonomous voice.
Shakespeare’s heroines in Clarissa’s memory
The Mother crosses some of William Shakespeare’s most famous female figures in favor of a new and contemporary story, showing how a passion can enliven or destroy, transform into an opportunity or a trap. The stories of the text thus become fragments of a torn memory that converges in the figure of Clarissa, an now elderly actress, consumed by a life entirely dedicated to the theatre.
Denied motherhood, lost opportunities, time dedicated exclusively to art, are gradually transformed into pieces of a feeling of regret that has all the characteristics of a condemnation. And Mara Giannetto, in the role of the protagonist, masterfully manages to convey on stage the intensity of this soul torn apart by her own passion. In fact, what remains of a life when, in chasing a dream, one has given up on fully loving oneself and others?
The theater that heals and the theater that consumes
A meaning of the power of theater that Gonciaruk offers with courage and truth, demonstrating how theater training must also provide tools to handle one’s talent and place the function of acting in one’s life, in the same way in which it helps one discover the opportunities for healing and salvation. A metacommunication on theatre, therefore, which could only draw from the vast sentimental range of Shakespeare’s production.
So, if A Midsummer Night’s Dreamperformed last July 22nd in the same location, recounts the enthusiasm of discovery and theatrical play, The Mother shows its most mature, painful and aware face, ideally composing a single story about the power of theater and its ability to transform those who pass through it.
The cast
The cast is completed by Nino Santamaria, Francesco Aligata, Gaetano Citto and Mariangela Pizzo, who alternate in the role of Ivan; Ester Gangemi (Desdemona), Andrea Bonutto (Juliet), Adriana Salemi (Cleopatra), Rosalba Orlando (Gertrude), Roberta Milano (Ophelia), Marisa Lasco (Cordelia) and Antonella Francica (Tamora).
