Mattia Furlani ends his season early. The Italian long jumper announced his stop after the injury suffered during the long jump qualifiers at the European Championships in Birmingham.
“My season ends here,” Furlani wrote in a post published on Instagram, explaining that he had suffered a new relapse after the physical problem he suffered about two and a half months ago in China.
«Two and a half months have now passed since that injury in China. Two months in which the objective was first and foremost to recover as best as possible to try to return to the stage healthy, even before performing. Months in which a lot of work was done both on the pitch and with the medical staff”, said the Italian.
«My body wasn’t ready yet»
Furlani underlined that he returned to racing only after receiving reassurances about his condition: “If I hadn’t had extreme certainty, and the Monte Carlo test was proof of this, I would never have entered the platform taking the risk, aware of a probable relapse.”
During the qualifiers in Birmingham, however, the problem recurred. «Today I felt good, I entered hard and evidently my body, at certain intensities, was not yet ready to return to the speed I was used to, suffering a relapse».
The outburst on social media
In the message Furlani also did not hide the psychological difficulties experienced in recent months. “I’ve probably been through the worst moments so far: I’m experiencing a lack of confidence in myself and my means which lately has only been growing, seeing the road a little blurry.”
Hence the decision to stop: «My season ends here».
