Carmine Fotia was enjoying the coolness of the Gambarie woods when we disturbed him with a morning phone call.
Will you be the centre-left candidate in the by-elections on 27 September?
«I hope so. I responded enthusiastically to the appeal of the progressive Reggio area. I didn’t ask for any guarantees from the parties and, if I am the candidate, I am sure I will win.”
How can he be? Look, we are running in the Cannizzaro college, where FI has frightening firepower.
«It’s true that the college is from Cannizzaro but the face is that of Roscioli. I would like to remind the people of Reggio that this land may not be governed by a Roman proconsul, nor by a follower of the fascists who set fire to Reggio in 1970. It’s not everything but it’s not little. These elections will be an identity challenge: Vannacci is the identity of hate; Forza Italia, that of power.”
And what is the identity of the centre-left?
«Those of a politics that must deal with the human dimension, talk to people and take charge of their problems. Politics cannot be a pure game of power. I offer myself as an instrument of the territory. I am a left-wing independent, I have my ideas and I try to make them compatible with those of others.”
