Jannik Sinner’s participation in the US Open is still accompanied by a question mark. The number one in world tennis concluded the tour de force away from the courts between tests and latest generation therapies to try to resolve the inflammation in the tendons of his right knee, a problem that kept him out of action after the victory at Wimbledon and forced him to give up the Masters 1000 in Montreal and Cincinnati.

Part of the checks were carried out at JMedical in Turin, where Sinner returned the day after his 25th birthday. The South Tyrolean champion underwent new specialist tests and shock wave therapies, before carrying out some on-field tests with a short training session in the Piedmontese capital.

He subsequently returned to Monte Carlo, where he tried some exchanges with coach Simone Vagnozzi. It will be precisely the sensations during training that provide the decisive indications. Moderate optimism filters through, also because the Flushing Meadows meeting is still several days away, but the final decision has not yet been made.

Caution before the green light

After more than a month without tournaments, the priority is to be sure that the knee problem is completely over. In a best-of-five-set Slam the athletic response must be optimal and Sinner, after the collapse in Paris linked to other causes, had already underlined the need to listen to one’s body and put it first.

The line therefore remains that of maximum caution: any participation in the US Open will only come with the definitive green light from the doctors. Among the elements evaluated are also the humid heat expected in New York during the tournament and the concrete surface, which is particularly demanding on the knee.

Musetti in the round of 16 in Cincinnati

While waiting for the reservation on Sinner to be lifted, Lorenzo Musetti smiles in Cincinnati. The Italian, seeded number 10, beat Michael Zheng in two sets with a score of 6-1 6-3, reaching the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Ohio for the first time. This season he had also reached the same round in the Madrid and Rome tournaments.

After the passage of the Vavassori-Bolelli pair, good news also arrives from the women’s doubles. Sara Errani, who in Cincinnati chose to play together with the young Canadian Leylah Fernandez, beat on her debut 6-2 7-6(2) the German Tamara Korpatsch and the British Emily Webley-Smith, who entered the draw in place of the Russian Mirra Andreeva and the Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
