The Ukrainian caregiver suspected of attempted murder of the elderly man in Vibo remains in prison. The judicial authority has in fact validated the arrest carried out three days ago by the police against the woman suspected of the crime.
The reconstruction of the attack
The intervention began around 2.50 am, when, at the request of the Operations Room of the Police Headquarters, staff from the General Prevention and Public Rescue Office intervened at a house in Vibo Valentia following a request for assistance.
Once on site, the operators found the elderly man inside his bedroom, unconscious and lying on the bed, with several blood-soaked bandages placed on his body, particularly in the abdominal area.
The healthcare staff, who had intervened in the meantime, immediately transported the man in code red to the emergency room of the “Jazzolino” hospital in Vibo Valentia; the clinical and diagnostic tests carried out at the hospital highlighted massive thoracic haemorrhage and a stab wound in the hypogastric region. Furthermore, multiple displaced fractures were found on the elderly man’s body.
Given the severity of the conditions, the patient was subsequently urgently transferred to the Catanzaro hospital, where he is still hospitalized with a reserved prognosis. The immediate investigative activities, launched by the Flying Squad of the Vibo Valentia Police Headquarters and coordinated by the local Public Prosecutor’s Office, have made it possible to acquire, at the stage of the investigations, serious circumstantial evidence regarding the elderly man’s caregiver. In particular, according to what emerged from the first investigations, she had started working at the elderly man’s home at the end of June 2026, temporarily replacing one of her compatriot colleagues, and should have completed her assignment on 20 August 2026.
During the investigations it was ascertained that the woman, after having set up a rudimentary “operating room” inside the elderly man’s bedroom, would have administered substances to the victim that would have had a sedative effect and, after putting him to sleep, would have made a laceration in the abdominal area using a kitchen knife. In this context, several knives, latex gloves and a pack of sodium chloride, used or otherwise prepared by the woman to harm the offended person, were seized. The conduct would have been carried out, according to the elements collected so far, for reasons which are still being ascertained. In particular, the woman, questioned in the presence of the defender, reported that she had carried out the act because she intended to remove an unspecified “animal” inside the man’s abdomen.
In light of the serious evidence acquired and the belief that there was a concrete risk of escape, deduced, among other elements, from the presence of a suitcase already prepared and the absence of a stable home, the Flying Squad proceeded on its own initiative to arrest the woman’s crime suspect, who was subsequently associated with the Reggio Calabria prison on the orders of the Public Prosecutor on duty. Today, the competent Judicial Authority validated the arrest, ordering the woman to be placed in precautionary custody in prison.
