Minister Musumeci, former governor of Sicily, does not back down. The attack on Catania airport, during the crisis which upset the plans of thousands of passengers, “smoked” by the ash of Etna (not to mention the side effects on the economy and tourism), had provoked angry reactions. Musumeci had hypothesized the move of the Fontanarossa airport, thus triggering the ire of the mayor of the Etna city, Enrico Trantino. A derby played in the camp of the right of Catania, with the mayor who had crushed the vision of his friend the minister: «It is a topic that has been discussed but a real feasibility study has never been done. If I have to express myself as mayor of the city and metropolitan mayor – Trantino underlined – I would observe that the strong point of Catania airport is its proximity to the centre, a 5-minute drive away. And above all I would add that a phase is underway, a negotiation for privatization, which will solve many of the problems and which will allow us to be more efficient with respect to the many critical issues of air infrastructure that we are currently experiencing. Therefore, I do not believe that it is an issue on the agenda and that it is appropriate to discuss it now.”
