From “Dighi doghi da!” at the “Spop-Art Fest”: an ideal passing of the baton along the same path, that of redemption, rebirth and repopulation of the villages of Calabria.
It is a real “call to the arts” that rises again from the Bastion and the panoramic Church of the Immaculate Conception in Badolato Borgo. Places which, due to their position and memory, are already in themselves outposts for the protection of beauty and which for two evenings will be transformed into an authentic “theatre of the soul”.
Here, between sunset and night, art returns to become a presence, a community and an act of poetic resistance. Poets, writers, musicians, singers, actors and sensitive souls are called to peacefully occupy these spaces with their own “weapons”: verses, notes, gestures, masks, songs and sounds. A creative garrison promoted by the Pro Loco of Badolato, under the umbrella of the “Spop-Art Fest”, as part of the “House of Arts and Cultures” project of Palazzo Gallelli, born from the vision of the Badolato artist Roberto Giglio and shared with the other protagonists of the project.
The objective is clear: to bring life, attention and participation to places that are only apparently marginal, but actually full of history, memory and meaning. Give them back a vital, aware and proactive community through the transformative power of art. After the exciting summer 2025 event, dedicated to music and poetry with Giorgio Caporale and Elisa Longo, the ritual of art in places returns for the second consecutive year with a program that intertwines poetic actor’s theater and traditional Mediterranean music.
Two evenings, a single trajectory: the roots of the Mediterranean
It starts on Wednesday 26 August, at 6.30 pm, at sunset, with “Magarìa. Elegy of a lost world”, a show by Eliana Iorfida and Francesco Gallelli for the AGARTHA collective, with the actor Francesco Gallelli and the musician and singer Gianluca Chiera on stage.
A theatrical journey into the memory of an ancient world, built through sounds, live songs and scenic writing, in which rites, beliefs and arcane figures resurface that cross Calabria and reach as far as North Africa. A dramaturgical research that starts from the dimension of the “lost world” to question what still survives today in the memory of places and communities.
The journey continues on Thursday 27 August, at 9.00 pm, with IONIAN DUO, an intimate and evocative musical encounter between the Calabrian lyre of Francesco Denaro and the Salento oud of Samuel Mele.
Two instruments, two territories, a common sea: the Mediterranean. Their melodies will trace a sonic route capable of crossing borders and generations, reconnecting bonds and bringing to light a common cultural matrix.
Two evenings that thus become a single story, built on the trajectory of shared roots, traditions that unite and places that ask to be experienced again.
Badolato once again becomes the meeting point between memory and contemporaneity, between heritage and creation, between the need to preserve and the equally urgent need to reinvent. Because living in a place also means giving it back a voice. And art, in Badolato, wants to continue to make that voice resonate.
“Spop-Art Fest” thus offers two immersive and exclusive experiences, dedicated to those who know how to recognize the magic of places and see in culture not only a form of expression, but a possible force for social and civil regeneration.
