“Gioia Tauro is not the Wild West and it is not the land of the ‘Ndrangheta: it belongs to the Italian State and is subject to its laws”.
Former mayor Aldo Alessio writes this in a press release. “In recent days – he continued – there has been a resurgence of the ‘Ndrangheta and criminal forces present in the city, aggravated by the presence of a juvenile gang which, under the direction of the local ‘Ndrangheta, is trying to impose its control on the territory. Doors of private citizens being stoned, boats on the beach with holes drilled in the bottom and thrown into the sea at night, cars set on fire: these are some of the alleged “stunts” with which they make us understand who is in charge of the territory. Everything happens, as if we had gone back in time, to distant years that we thought were now forgotten.”
The fire in the center of the night
“This night – he revealed – – a commercial establishment selling drinks in via Francesco Tripodi, on the corner with via Metauro, in the city centre, was set on fire, almost certainly of malicious origin.
These are clear signs of a ‘ndrangheta and criminal resurgence that is once again attempting to impose the rules of an anti-state as opposed to the democratic state. All institutions, in all their forms and structures, must block this escalation of violence in its tracks. It is necessary to raise the level of vigilance on the control of the territory, making the illegal life of the ‘Ndrangheta and the juvenile gang that acts as a nursery for the ‘Ndrangheta more difficult. However, we cannot leave everything to the police and the judiciary alone, who we thank for their daily commitment. Politics and honest citizens must also do their part to the full, severing any ties, relationships or associations with these individuals, who must be isolated from our community. We ask the police for an even greater collaborative commitment, to nip this mafia resurgence in the area in its tracks, so that every citizen can feel safe in their own home”.
